Halloween in the Philippines is a mix of spooky and sentimental from “Magandang Gabi Bayan” or KMJS-inspired stories, and slayable costumes to the solemn commemoration of Undas season. It’s the time when candles, costume parties, tricks and treats, KTVs, and a few jump scares all blend into one festive mood.

Interestingly, our Japanese students also share the same excitement for Halloween. While Japan doesn’t treat it as a traditional holiday, its modern celebrations are legendary, especially in places like Shibuya, where costume parades and themed cafés fill the streets every October.

Tutors’ Horrors:

Because RareJob tutors are never short of unpredictable experiences, we asked them to share their spookiest stories this season, and the results didn’t disappoint. From eerie to funny to downright “I swear this really happened” moments, their tales prove that even ordinary lesson sessions can take a supernatural turn.

Some tutors recalled creepy encounters that happened right in class. Imagine calmly discussing grammar when your student suddenly asks, “Tutor, who’s that behind you?” Others reported experiencing flickering lights, whispers in their headsets, or cameras glitching at the worst possible moment. A few even joked that multitasking during Halloween means managing both students and spirits! It turns out that ESL teaching can be a real test of composure when the paranormal decides to join the lesson.
