The corporate world has always been depicted as a realm full of competition; whoever enters it will need an infinite drive to continue. This has always been our motivation as a student – to strive harder in order to cope with what the future endeavors may hold – but this wasn’t the case when we graduated from our university. The moment we step out of the academic phase of our life, the struggle to look for the perfect job was imminent.

I was a fresh graduate that was included in the competition to be hired.  For me, applying was one of the hardest things I ever did in my entire life knowing that you’d have to face a series of exams or interviews before securing yourself for that position.

During my unemployed days, I check my email and JobStreet account religiously for job openings that closely resemble what I really want to do. It took me months before I found the opportunity of becoming a staff at RareJob. At that time, I didn’t have any idea what this company is or what it does. I applied for the position simply because it fits the job description that I was looking for, plus, the benefits being offered are really good. The application process had the usual exams and interviews. I was really nervous since there were a lot of applicants battling for that one position.

After waiting for a few weeks, I received a call from Charm of HR telling me that I got the position. I kept nodding and grinning the whole time she was explaining it to me. After that, I just sat on our sofa speechless. “Did it really happen?”, “Did I really get the job?” – these were just some of the thoughts that flooded my mind that time. Nonetheless, I was really ecstatic knowing that I finally landed my first job.

Fast forward to the first day that I would be officially starting my work, I was shivering from either being too excited or nervous. That, however, didn’t stop me from proceeding to enter the office. From the entrance to the labyrinth-like structure of the glass walls, and finally to the secluded cubicles where I saw an empty chair waiting for my arrival, everything was so new to me that I was experiencing cramps from smiling non-stop. Kidding aside, it was definitely something I wouldn’t forget. On that day, I was welcomed by my teammates and supervisor and told me to familiarize myself with my assigned tasks.

Learning about the operations and policies was overwhelming since I wasn’t really familiar about the online tutoring system. I did my best to digest all the information so I can apply it in my tasks. But do you know what made me love my job even  more? It’s RareJob’s mission and vision, actually. They provide opportunities for the Japanese community to learn to speak in English – a concept that encourages diversity, and at the same time, an opportunity to grow and develop. It is a breathtaking idea that may seem so simple, and yet has a ripple effect in the future.

I can now confirm that indeed, you will never work a day in your life if you chose a job that you love. I got the chance to be part of something big; a team that you can trust and lets you feel that you belong, a company that treats everyone like family, and a lively working atmosphere that lets you work while having fun! I’m really lucky that I am part of RareJob. First job, first love!
